It seems that trading is an easy job: you spend your day in front of a screen delibating a drink, listening in sottofondo good music and waiting with your feet on the table the next profitable trading opportunity. There is nothing much more far that this. If you are an intraday trader or worse a scalper you are always looking for a volatile market. In a volatile market even bad traders make money. So there are many bad traders whose unique feature is to wait days, weeks, months for a volatile market. Everyday wathing the screen and keeping the finger away from the market ready to jump on the bandwagon as soon as a stock or a market will start moving. What all this mean ? It means that you cannot go on holiday whenever you like or with a peaceful spirit because the feeling is that after much wating you are really missing the big opportunity of the year. So you can think that fortunate will be swing traders because they are looking for overnight volatility which sometimes is not the same than intraday volatilità. Again this is false. As a futures swing trader I can assure that you will always refrained to move from the screen becasue you sense that the black swon (as Perry Kaufman would say) is hauling over your head. And if you move terrible things could happen: your UMTS card will not work; your UMTS card will not able to connect the satellite; after departure you will discover that your laptop is unbelievably broken; after departure you will remind that you did not register the access to the trading platform on your brand new laptop; and so on. Example: I decided to take some holiday end December 2007 both alone and with my family but I underwent so many hearth breaking disadventures that I will promise to myself that I will not move from home for many months. I had 2 laptops with me, 2 UMTS cards, a back up executable software both on the UBS pen and on a Cd rom, 2 mobiles, but notwithstanding all this paraphernalia I was terrified during many hours looking desperatley an internet caffee to check my positions. And I will never tell you that I was staggering under the raing along the woods of North East Italy with my metal detector on the first world war battlefied bringing in my backbag my brand new laptop and checking the market on regular basis. I understood that next time it will be better stay home watching a war movie on tv. Trading is seldom glory and very often only hard work.
